bookish college

I'm okay with this.

It has come to my attention that the books I am required to read this semester for my Women's Popular Genres class include:

Maybe college classes won't be so scary, after all.

Caribbean Sea family friendship travel

Our cruise through the Caribbean.

Alas, my days at sea are over, and I am on solid ground once again. It was so wonderful to spend seven long days in the middle of the ocean with my two best friends and our wonderful mamas (who planned the entire trip). This summer vacation with Carnival Cruise Lines included one-day stops in Jamaica, Cozumel, and the Cayman Islands. But the ship itself offered complete relaxation and serenity, two things that I can't seem to get enough of these days. And even though we occupied most of our time on the ship by eating, sleeping, and sun-bathing, the experience was no less than surreal when I stopped to smell the salty sea air and lose myself in the beautiful views.

musings

I have come to the conclusion...

that I am really an old woman in an 18-year-old's body. Here's why:

1. I wake up earlier than 8:00 every morning. (Not because I feel like I have to, but because my body basically rejects sleep after that time.) I take at least one nap throughout the day if I can help it, and I'm usually passed out by 11:00 each night. Now don't tell me that doesn't sound like an eighty-year-old's sleep schedule.

2. I suffer from mild chest pains. I have since I was in 5th grade, yet my doctor says I'm healthy. Perhaps it's all in my head? I highly doubt it, but these kinds of pains are not very common for someone younger than forty.

3. My favorite foods are mashed potatoes, cooked spinach, ice cream, and peanut butter. Notice that none of these require teeth.

4. I would say that I'm pretty conservative when it comes to things like dating, modesty, and relationships. (The guy makes the first move, sex should be saved for marriage, tight clothes do not make girls look attractive...) I think you get my drift.

5. On a typical Saturday night, I'm sitting on my couch with a cup of chai tea and watching a romantic comedy or reading a good book. Occasionally, I will get all dressed up and spend the weekend out with my friends, but I'm not exactly what one would call a "party animal."

6. I adore anything vintage. Old telephones, clothes, bathtubs, jewelry, photographs, movies, music, cars, and whatever else that could be considered an antique makes me incredibly giddy.

7. Although I've seemed to have gotten the hang of it, driving is one of those things that I will always be a bit uncomfortable with. Therefore, I tend to move a little slower than most people when I'm behind the wheel. (Okay, I'll be honest—I'm pretty much slow at everything.) My grandmother has the same tendency.

Yep, I am convinced that I'm an old woman stuck in a teenager's body. But hey, I'm actually okay with this.

Enough of this humdrum.

As much as I enjoy the freedom of summer, it's always been much harder for me to get motivated during the warmer months. School and theatre no longer control my schedule, hobbies get old after a while, and friends are either in faraway places are simply tired of my company (kind of sad, if you ask me). Therefore, I sit on my butt and proceed to watch endless Smallville reruns while I surf the web or flip through a magazine. Occasionally, I'll go to the gym or spend the day shopping with my madre. That's about it.

A month ago, I couldn't wait to do absolutely nothing. I was tired of projects and plays and traveling. I wanted to stay home and relax. Getting a job wasn't on my mind because I figured my lack of availability (UT orientation, trip to Nebraska, Caribbean cruise, family vacation, etc.) would make me the least reliable employee. Well, relaxation is all fine and good until it turns into utter indolence. For the past two weeks, I have been nothing but lazy. I'm stuck in a rut, dear blog, and I haven't the least idea how to redeem myself. For the first time in what seems like ages, I have too much time on my hands. And I'll be honest, not too much of that time is being spent wisely.

So tell me, what is a girl to do? Should I start a new hobby like sewing or baking? Volunteer at an old folks' home? Get a head start on college preparations? All of these things sound wonderful in theory, but my lack of inspiration is weighing me down. Take this blog for example. Today's post is the first one I've written in almost a week! Why? Because believe it or not, I'm tired. It is the strangest thing that doing nothing for so long can be exhausting. And this kind of exhaustion is among the worst kinds—it is like a disease, becoming harder to cure as the days go by.

But I am determined to put an end to this deadly routine. I've had my fair share of downtime, and I'm more than ready to busy myself with something good and worthy. Something that I can respect. Now, the first thing I must do is figure out what that something might be...

Suggestions, anyone?
