Mountain memories.
In July 2008, the summer before I turned 17, my family and I road-tripped through Yellowstone National Park. I remember thinking that Wyoming was the most awe-inspiring place I'd ever seen, and I'm convinced that I would still feel the same today. While on our week-long tour of the park, we hiked up the sides of cliffs despite the rocky terrain, swam in hot springs and frolicked in snow, rode through the rolling hills on horseback, sat on boulders overlooking cascading waterfalls, and counted down the minutes until Old Faithful did its thing. Not surprisingly, Jason almost got himself killed with his crazy stunts, Lance threw a fit when we had to sleep in a rundown cabin, and Alyssa made fun of Granny at every available opportunity (like when it took a team of cowboys to put the old lady on a horse). But as dysfunctional as our family was is, I wouldn't have it any other way.
It's breathtaking places like this that I fall in love with every time I look at the photos. And it's times like these—those memorable moments spent with close family and friends—that I long to relive over and over again.
Mmm, pancakes.
Seriously though, what's not to love about Valentine's Day? It's so much fun! And I've been craving pancakes for days. Update: Apparently, I didn't get the memo about Shrove Tuesday. Thanks, Wayne, for letting me know that a day just for pancakes actually exists!
*Giving up sweets again for Lent, y'all... As well as grains and dairy, too. Eek! I'm just hoping that this health experiment will be more successful than last year's.
A special Sunday occasion.
On Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending the 2013 Open House for Antebellum Oaks Venue, one of our most valued clients. In between exploring the beautiful grounds and the party pavilion, I was able to snap a few photos for their blog, mingle with a number of talented people* (including an old high school friend, who was coincidentally manning the Cupcake Bar!), and munch on a variety of delicious finger foods. Really now, how much more fun could my job possibly be?
P.S. See the gorgeous woman with the big lips and the blue blazer? That's my boss, Autumn. If you couldn't already tell from the photo, she's fabulous.
*Also pictured are just a few of the wonderful vendors that made the event possible: Bee Lavish Vintage Rentals, The Cupcake Bar, Wild Bunches, Chloe + Isabel Jewelry, and Dagar's Catering.
Playing with fire.
If you didn't already know, I'm a huge movie lover. Honestly, who isn't? My favorite films are the mood lifters with glorious endings that make your heart swell... The ones with strong female characters, handsome witty men, and yes, some sort of love story. (Go ahead, call me a typical girl. I'll get over it.) Growing up, it was movies like these that shaped my [mis]understanding of how life and love should be: sometimes tragic, other times hilarious, but always beautiful. And of course, appealing to the senses, with messages that ring in favor of inner desire over truth.
It's starting to sink in, however, that life is not at all like a feel-good movie, and Lord knows I'm no heroine. I fail to find happiness in "harmless" impulsivity, and I rarely gain a sense of freedom from acting on a whim. Regardless of how I'm feeling, I always feel worse after crossing boundaries that disguise themselves as opportunities. No matter how good the intentions, some things simply don't sit well with me. And they shouldn't.
In the movies, basing important decisions on strong emotions is usually encouraged—rewarded, even. But in real life, it's like playing with fire. People always gets hurt in the end.
