I'm getting old.

Guess who turned 18 yesterday! Yep, that's right, Yours Truly. And my day was great, for the most part.

I woke up at 4:45am, tried to make myself as pretty as possible, drove to Starbucks where my best friends were waiting for me (they are AMAZING), sipped a Pumpkin Spice Latte and chatted until 7:00am, rushed to school and arrived just in time for the bell, went through first, second, and third period with ease, but then failed a quiz in Government, begrudgingly attended rehearsal from 3:00 to 5:00pm, and finally went to Gianna's Italian Kitchen for dinner with my family.

Yes, it was a fun day. But the real celebration will be on Friday night—not a huge deal, just a nice little birthday/Halloween get-together with a few good friends. The plan is to watch scary movies into the wee hours of the night while stuffing our faces with pumpkin cake. It will be lovely.

But, anyway, I cannot believe I'm already 18... I mean, I could legally get married if I wanted to. And even though that in itself it pretty awesome (just kidding, no boyfriend here!), I'm really going to miss being 17. It's just a good age, is it not? It's the age of innocence and self-discovery, falling in love and having fun. And, okay, I didn't fall in love, but it was still a BLAST, and I learned quite a bit.

Maybe this year will be just as great... I'm hoping for the best!

A noun or a name?

Fun fact about me: I have an obsession with baby names. I love researching the meanings of random names, and my friends like to tease me about my favorites—I find that unique names are the ones that fascinate me the most (probably because I was given the most common name on the planet).

I've been in love with the name Isabelle for a while (which means "God's promise"), but my new favorite is something a little more unique...

What do you think about Winter Rose?

Rose would be her middle name, so she would just go by Winter. It's not your typical name, but I figure if Summer and Autumn can be names, why can't Winter? And as for the middle name, I've always loved the simple yet classic Rose. However, my friends seem to think that when put together, it sounds more like a noun than a name. Personally, I don't see the problem with that, especially when the name paints a picture like this in my mind.

Delicate, lovely, romantic, and somewhat wistful. I like it.

Happily wasting time.

I just spent the last three hours talking to my parents about everything that has been on my mind for the past couple of weeks... UNC, Footloose, future plans, my brothers, the list goes on. Three hours that I could have been working on my government project or writing my college application essays or even catching up on some sleep.

Yet it was so worth it. Truth be told, I love wasting time. But then again, I don't consider the time spent with my family wasted at all. On the contrary, I believe those moments to be the most valuable. Even when you have a million and one things to do, it's okay to let it all go every once in a while. Do something fun or spontaneous or relaxing. Let time slip through your fingers.

Take a long bubble bath. Watch your favorite movie. Dive into a deep conversation with someone you love. I gained more wisdom and knowledge out of that one three-hour discussion with my parents than I could ever gain from twenty government projects. And I loved every minute of it.

I wish all nights were like this one.

October is upon us!

Ah, just thinking about it makes me smile. Why do I like this month so much, you might ask? I could name at least fifty different reasons why October is so amazing (the lovely fall weather, for one), but for the sake of time, I'll give you only the most important: October is wonderful because it sets in motion the giant ripple of holidays that encourage feelings of excitement and togetherness among family and friends... And, bonus: It begins with my absolute favorite, All Hollows' Eve!

October 1st is day one of this spooky season. And with it comes exciting ghost stories, pumpkin-carving parties, and ridiculously cool costumes. Next is the season of thanks, which includes spending large amounts of time with family, praising God for everything He's given us, and stuffing our faces with TONS of delicious food (my favorite is the pumpkin pie). And then there's Christmas, the season to be jolly! I shouldn't even have to elaborate on this particular holiday. I mean, come on, who doesn't love Christmas?

Obviously, these three holiday seasons occur throughout the months of October, November, and December. But October is the month that starts is all! Once October hits, everything is uphill from there. And THAT is just one reason why my birth month is incredible. Here's to the beginning of holiday bliss.

A piece of my heart goes with each of them.

Over the past four weeks, Tomball STAGE has been rehearsing for the production of A Piece of My Heart by Shirley Lauro, and I am sad to say that our last performance will be tonight at 7:30. It's crazy to think back to the first read-through and look at how far we've come since then. I can't believe it's all over! Thousands of happy memories have been made in the past month, and I owe it all to A Piece of My Heart.

The play is anything but happy—it tells the story of six brave women who experienced firsthand the horrors of Vietnam War—but the process of building such a powerful masterpiece has been an absolute blast. This was my first big role in a Tomball STAGE production, and I'm so grateful that I got to be apart of it with all of my best friends.

I don't think I could be prouder of our cast and crew. We've definitely put our blood, sweat, and tears into this show, and I wouldn't give up one minute of it.

Hey there, senior year.

I have so much to do, and in so little time. Oh, how I take for granted those long, lazy days of summer (see above)... But I do have a feeling that this year will be tons of fun, especially with the new Tomball STAGE production up and running (I got one of the six lead roles!), the very interesting classes I'm taking (see below), and everything else senior year has to offer. Even being given the title "senior" is refreshing. You really don't know how good that is until you've hit 12th grade, after three long years of struggling to make it to the top.

So, yes, all is well. But all is extremely busy! Which leads me to ask the question: Why am I blogging when I should be doing homework, memorizing lines, or writing college essays?

Fall Semester Schedule

1. Dual Credit English (Mr. Youngblood) — This is my favorite class, simply because I'm in love with English. And Mr. Youngblood. In a non-creepy/disgusting way, of course.

2. DC Statistics (Mr. Prather) — Now, math is not exactly my idea of fun, but it has always come somewhat easy for me. And I can already tell this class is going to be a breeze. Plus, three of my best friends sit right next to me. No complaints there.

3. DC Anatomy (Ms. Peel) — Science, on the other hand, has never been my forte. Quite frankly, I suck at it. Always have, always will. And that includes the vast majority of sciences, ranging from chemistry to biology to physics. It hates me. But fortunately for me, I have a very sweet teacher and, once again, three best friends surrounding me. Therefore, it shouldn't be hell. But, we do have to disect a cat at the end of the year, and that's just gross.

4. DC Government (Ms. Temperilli, aka The Beast) — Okay, so she's not that bad. Not really, anyway. But she does expect A LOT out of her students! I can already tell that this will be the one class that I will have to work extra hard in. Not only will we have to take forty million pages of notes every week, but there will also be forty million quizzes as well. Hard quizzes. Bottom line: government is not my cup of tea.

5. Theatre Arts 1 (Mr. Ballew) — I'm basically only in this class to be an aide for the theatre teachers. I make copies, organize student papers, work on my specific officer duties (I'm Secretary of Tomball STAGE), and occasionally bring Mr. Ballew a Diet Dr. Pepper. That's about it. A piece of cake.

6. Varsity Production Theatre Arts (Mr. Cottom) — This is my real theatre class, the one that I actually have to put effort into. Pretty much all of my best friends are with me in here, so it's one big party. Except when we're working on scenes, monologues, play-talks, etc. Anyway, it's challenging at times, but in a good way. Mr. Cottom can be pretty cool too, when he's in a good mood.

7. Pre-AP French 2 (Ms. Ratz) — Probably my least favorite class. Why? Because the teacher does not teach. Seriously, she should just do us all a favor and quit. Harsh, but true. I didn't learn a thing in French 1 last year, but I'm required to take at least two years of foreign language. And because I chose to start late, I'm in a class full of sophomores. Lucky me.

But overall, a good schedule.

How about a do-over?

Today I had auditions for the first production of the school year, A Piece of My Heart. I read twice for the directors, and the second time was pretty terrible. I won't go into detail, but everything about it was just...awkward. The emotion was there, I suppose, but physically, it was a disaster.

Or at least, that's how I remember it. And isn't that the worst feeling? Walking out of an audition wishing that you would have done something differently, or thinking that it could be so much better, if only you had another chance... I guess that's just how life goes sometimes. But you just have to accept the past and move on, in hopes that the next time will be less disappointing.

So here's to forgetting past mistakes, disappointments, and failures. Tomorrow is callbacks, and I vow to not let the possibility of embarrassing myself keep me from giving it my all. Tomorrow, the fear of failing goes out the window.
